Colorado Springs: Nancy Lewis Park marks 30 years with celebration and Wind Phone dedication

~ Colorado Springs, CO - The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care are coming together to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nancy Lewis Park. The event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. at the park located at 2615 N. Logan Ave.

The celebration will not only recognize three decades of Nancy Lewis Park serving the community, but also highlight the longstanding partnership between the City and Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care. Mayor Yemi Mobolade, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director Skyler Rorabaugh and Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation Executive Director Susan Edmondson will all be in attendance to provide remarks.

According to Skyler Rorabaugh, director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, "For 30 years, Nancy Lewis Park has been a place where people can gather, connect and enjoy the outdoors, which is a fitting reflection of Nancy Lewis' lasting impact on Colorado Springs." He also added that this anniversary gives them an opportunity to honor her legacy while celebrating their partnership with Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care.

As part of the celebration, Pikes Peak Hospice will dedicate a Wind Phone at the park. This new feature offers people a quiet place to speak aloud to someone they have lost. The disconnected telephone line within a private "booth" provides a space for remembrance, reflection and connection while experiencing grief.

According to Susan Edmondson, Executive Director of Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation, "There are more than 600 Wind Phones across the world." She hopes that this Wind Phone at Nancy Lewis Park becomes a place where anyone experiencing loss can pause, remember someone they love and miss, and find a moment of comfort in a beautiful outdoor setting.

The Wind Phone is just one example of the longstanding partnership between Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services and Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care. The organization also has a legacy bench program in the park.

Nancy Lewis Park, named after longtime Colorado Springs parks advocate and former Parks Director Nancy Lewis, first opened in 1996 and was refreshed in 2016. This park is a reflection of her lasting impact on the community and her dedication to creating and preserving public spaces for residents to enjoy.

The 30th anniversary celebration of Nancy Lewis Park is not only a time to honor the past, but also to look towards the future as this partnership continues to add meaningful ways for people to connect with the park and with one another. The event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
