City of Long Beach to Hold Moment of Silence in Remembrance of 9/11 Terrorist Attacks

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - On Friday, September 11, 2026, the City of Long Beach will come together to observe a citywide moment of silence in honor of the 25th anniversary of the tragic events of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Led by Mayor Rex Richardson and joined by members of the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments, the memorial ceremony will serve as a citywide opportunity to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.

Mayor Richardson expressed the importance of remembering and honoring those who were lost on that fateful day. "Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the lives lost on September 11 and the extraordinary courage shown in the face of unimaginable tragedy," he said. "This moment of silence gives our Long Beach community an annual chance to come together in remembrance, reflect on the sacrifices made that day and reaffirm our commitment to unity, service and compassion."

The ceremony will begin at approximately 9:05 a.m. with a Last Alarm tribute followed by a ceremonial wreath placement. Mayor Richardson will then share words of reflection before a moment of silence is observed. The ceremony will conclude with a bagpiper performance of "Amazing Grace."

Chief of Police Wally Hebeish also emphasized the significance of honoring those who lost their lives on September 11th. "We will always remember the lives lost and the countless acts of bravery and courage on September 11th," he said. "As we reflect on that day, we honor the ultimate sacrifice made in service to others."

Echoing Chief Hebeish's sentiments, Long Beach Fire Chief Dennis Buchanan spoke about how September 11 holds a special meaning for those in the fire service. "We remember the firefighters and first responders who ran toward danger that morning, knowing others were depending on them," he said. "Their courage represents the very foundation of our profession - service before self."

The City is encouraging members of the community to take a moment for a quiet, personal reflection during this time to honor the memories of those who were killed and the bravery of the first responders in New York, Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia on Sept. 11, 2001.

Residents can watch the ceremony via livestream on various City pages including Facebook, YouTube, and Long Beach Television. Additionally, all City facilities will fly the American flag at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, Sept. 11 as a mark of respect for the first responders and civilians who died during the terrorist attack.

As Long Beach comes together to remember and honor those who were lost on September 11th, it serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity that can be found in times of tragedy. The City hopes that this annual moment of silence will continue to bring the community together in remembrance and reflection for years to come.
