EVANSVILLE, Ind. ~ Evansville's Department of Urban Forestry will host a free community tree-planting event at Tepe Park on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 9 a.m.
The event at 1212 S. Garvin St. will begin with a demonstration by City Arborist Shawn Dickerson on planting and establishing young trees. Participants will then plant 10 trees in the park, the department said.
The event is open to residents of all ages and experience levels. The department said no prior planting experience is needed and encouraged residents to register in advance through a SignupGenius link provided by the city.

"Trees play an important role in making our neighborhoods healthier and more inviting places to live," Dickerson said in the announcement. He said the event would give residents planting and care knowledge they could use in their own yards and neighborhoods.
Indiana University's Environmental Resilience Institute is funding the event and providing the trees, tools and equipment, according to the announcement. ERI intern Bea Burton and an institute staff member will help facilitate the planting. Burton has worked with the community and the city's Urban Forestry Department on an Urban Forest Master Plan, the announcement said.
The city described the event as part of its efforts to involve residents in caring for Evansville's urban forest.
