Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson, Mayor's Office of Community Honor Frontline Violence Reduction Leaders at 'Safety is Belonging' Celebration

CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and city agencies hosted the second annual "Safety is Belonging" event at Malcolm X College to recognize workers and organizations involved in violence prevention, survivor support and community healing.
The gathering brought together community violence intervention, victim services and gender-based violence partners. The program included remarks from city and community leaders, a wellness panel and recognition of organizations working in prevention, intervention, healing and survivor support.
Johnson thanked frontline workers for their efforts and said his administration would continue investing in them and the communities they serve. He said their work supports survivors, prevents violence and helps neighborhoods feel secure and connected.

Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Emmanuel Andre said the event recognized survivors, families, advocates and leaders working toward safer and more equitable communities. He described belonging as an important part of safety.
The Mayor's Office of Community Safety led a panel called "Who Holds the Helpers?" featuring violence prevention leaders Tracey Lee of Trajectory Changing Solutions, JaShawn Hill of Chicago Survivors, Celia Colon, founder and CEO of Giving Others Dreams, and Karla Altmayer, co-director of Healing to Action.
The discussion focused on the effects of violence on communities and frontline workers, wellness for people doing the work, and the role of belonging in community safety. The city said the event was intended to strengthen ties between city agencies and community partners and reaffirm its approach to safety through prevention, intervention and healing.
Department of Family and Support Services Commissioner Angela Green said the work includes helping people feel seen and supported and providing opportunities to heal.
