Boston: October is Pedestrian Safety Month

Rezul News/10748096
~ The Boston City Council has recognized October as Pedestrian Safety Month, adopting a resolution that encourages residents to look out for people traveling on foot and supports further efforts to improve street safety.

The resolution cites a broad decline since 2015 in Boston EMS reports of pedestrians struck by vehicles, but says 247 pedestrians were struck in the first half of 2026, underscoring the need for continued safety measures.

Boston lowered its default speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph in 2017 as part of efforts to make streets safer for people of all ages and abilities and advance the goals of Vision Zero Boston, according to the resolution.

It also notes that pedestrians accounted for more than 20 percent of traffic fatalities in Massachusetts in 2025, with nearly 70 percent of those crashes occurring on municipally owned roads. People aged 65 and older made up 40 percent of those killed while walking in the state that year, the resolution says.

Potential safety measures include speed humps, raised crosswalks and intersections, narrower streets, improved lighting and signage. The resolution says community members, civic groups and elected officials have called for further infrastructure changes, traffic management and enforcement of existing laws.

The council said its recognition reflects support for continued investment in pedestrian safety infrastructure and policy, with particular attention to protecting pedestrians.
