Boston Election Department Completes Recount for Middlesex and Suffolk Senate District Election

~ Boston, MA- The Boston Election Commission has completed a recount of ballots cast in Wards 4, 5, 21, and 22 for the recent mayoral election. Representatives from both the William N. Brownsberger and Daniel Lander campaigns were present to observe the manual recount of paper ballots. Staff from the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth were also in attendance.
After the recount, the official vote tally was determined to be 3,369 for Brownsberger and 5,131 for Lander. The Boston Election Commission certified these results at 5:42 p.m. today.
However, at the request of the Lander campaign and in accordance with MGL Chapter 54, Section 135, the Election Department will conduct an additional review of absentee and vote-by-mail ballot materials. This review will include a comparison of signatures on ballot applications and returned ballot envelopes.

The Boston Election Department will organize these materials and continue with the administrative process for reviewing absentee and vote-by-mail ballots. Representatives from both campaigns and members of the public will be able to observe this process. It is important to note that this review is separate from the recount that was completed and certified earlier today.
If any challenges are made regarding the validity of a voter's signature, they must be raised through appropriate legal channels. The Boston Election Commissioners will reconvene on Thursday, September 10th at 9 a.m. at Boston City Hall to continue this process.
