Bloomington: Temporary Water Discoloration Linked to Seasonal Conditions

~ Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) has recently received an influx of reports from customers regarding discolored water and a higher frequency of water filter replacements. According to CBU, these changes are a result of seasonal conditions at the Monroe Reservoir and adjustments being made at the water treatment plant.

As reservoir conditions shift, CBU is able to draw water from different depths of the lake. However, current conditions have required drawing from a lower level where naturally occurring manganese is more prevalent. This mineral can cause a temporary brown or yellow tint to the water and may also lead to a shortened replacement cycle for household filters.

While manganese can affect the appearance and taste of water, CBU assures that it does not pose a health risk at the levels currently being observed. In fact, it is not regulated as a primary contaminant by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). All samples taken today throughout the distribution system are within all applicable EPA health advisory levels.

To address this issue, CBU regularly monitors source and finished water quality and adjusts treatment processes accordingly. However, due to limited capacity at the current source-water levels, complete removal of manganese is not possible. As a result, CBU is conducting additional hydrant flushing and enhanced monitoring throughout the water system in an effort to improve water clarity and ensure the continued safety of drinking water.

For residents experiencing discoloration in their tap water, CBU recommends running cold water through a faucet for several minutes to help clear any discolored water from household plumbing. Additionally, they suggest changing water filters more frequently until conditions normalize. If discoloration persists after flushing, customers are encouraged to email CBU with their name and address. This information will assist in identifying affected areas and coordinating additional hydrant flushing where necessary.
