Universal Preschool is For Everyone: Governor Polis Releases Statement on Colorado's Successful Preschools

DENVER ~ Governor Polis of Colorado has released a statement regarding the recent filing of amicus briefs by the U.S. Solicitor General and several states and organizations with the United States Supreme Court. These briefs are requesting the court to intervene in Colorado's Universal Preschool Program (UPK), which has been highly popular and successful.
The Governor expressed his passion for creating a Colorado that benefits all its citizens, where every student receives a strong start and families can thrive. He also highlighted the program's success as a national model, saving families over $6,300 per year and preparing more than 40,000 children for success in the classroom.
Governor Polis emphasized that all religious schools are welcome to participate in the Universal Preschool Program, stating that their participation is crucial in achieving their goal of providing access to quality education for all children regardless of their background. He encouraged more faith-based preschools to join the program so that they can expand access, help families save money, and give more children a strong start.

According to data from program years 2023-24, 2024-25, and through April of 2025-26, at least 68 faith-based providers participated in Universal Preschool, serving over 1,386 students and receiving payments totaling over $7 million. In program year 2024-25 alone, at least 54 faith-based providers participated, serving over 1,741 students and receiving payments totaling more than $9 million. As of April in program year 2025-26, at least 79 faith-based providers have participated, serving over 2,052 students and receiving payments totaling more than $9.5 million.
The Governor's statement highlights the success of Colorado's Universal Preschool Program and its commitment to inclusivity by welcoming all faith-based providers to participate. With this continued support from various organizations and states through amicus briefs filed with the Supreme Court, the program's success is expected to continue and benefit even more families and children in the future.
