Texas: Governor Abbott Issues Disaster Declaration To Prevent New World Screwworm Fly Infestation

~ In response to the potential threat of the New World screwworm fly, Governor Greg Abbott has issued a statewide disaster declaration. This declaration will provide the Texas New World Screwworm (NWS) Response Team with the necessary resources to prevent the spread of this destructive parasite into Texas and protect livestock and wildlife.

Governor Abbott expressed concern over the northward spread of the NWS fly from Mexico towards the southern border of the United States. He emphasized that although it is not yet present in Texas or the U.S., it poses a serious threat to the state's livestock industry and wildlife. As per state law, Governor Abbott has taken preemptive action to prevent any potential infestation that could cause severe damage to Texas property.

With this statewide disaster declaration, the Texas NWS Response Team will have access to all state government prevention and response resources. This will enable them to effectively combat and eradicate this pest if necessary. Governor Abbott stated that he will not wait for harm to reach livestock and wildlife before taking action.

To further strengthen their efforts, Governor Abbott has directed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) to establish a joint Texas New World Screwworm Response Team. Additionally, he has partnered with Secretary Brooke Rollins from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to create a new $750 million Domestic Sterile NWS Production Facility in Edinburg, Texas.

The governor's proactive measures demonstrate his commitment to protecting Texas' agriculture industry and preserving its natural resources. The statewide disaster declaration serves as a reminder that swift action is necessary in preventing any potential threats from becoming a reality.
