Texas: Governor Abbott Directs Review Of Airports Over Illegal Religious Discrimination

Rezul News/10743008
~ In a recent development, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to address potential religious discrimination at airports in Texas. The governor has directed a review of all state grants given to entities that operate airports in the state, including Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). This review could result in the revocation of active state grant funds and the denial of any future grants.

The decision comes after reports that DFW plans to install ablution facilities for Islamic washing rituals, while IAH has already installed one such facility and an interconnecting prayer room. Governor Abbott has expressed concern that these facilities may be singling out one religious group for special treatment, which is illegal under federal and state laws.

In a letter addressed to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Governor Abbott has requested that the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration conduct an immediate review of the religious facilities at DFW and IAH. He also urged them to take appropriate corrective action if necessary. As recipients of federal funds, these airports are required to comply with laws prohibiting religious discrimination.

Governor Abbott stated, "These ablution facilities appear designed to single out one subset of the population for special treatment based on religion. That is illegal." He further added, "Both airports are government-owned facilities. The federal and state constitutions prohibit government from facilitating this sort of discrimination."

It is important to note that upon acceptance of any grant award, recipients must certify compliance with all laws prohibiting discrimination. The governor's letters can be viewed on his official website.

This move by Governor Abbott highlights his commitment to upholding the principles of equality and non-discrimination in Texas. It remains to be seen what actions will be taken by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration following this review.
