Texas: Governor Abbott Appoints Four To Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force

~ Governor Greg Abbott has recently appointed four new members to the Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force, a group responsible for coordinating the implementation of the state's plan for preventing, screening, diagnosing, and managing chronic kidney disease. The newly appointed members are Christine Burgess, M.D., Ajay Israni, M.D., Matthew T. Smith, M.D., and Donald Wesson, M.D.
Dr. Christine Burgess, a physician and lab medical director at Clinical Pathology Laboratories in Austin, brings a wealth of experience to the task force. She is a member of several medical organizations including the Travis County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association. Dr. Burgess received her Bachelor of Arts in Microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin and went on to earn a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from Emory University before obtaining her Doctor of Medicine from UT Health Science Center in San Antonio.

Joining Dr. Burgess on the task force is Dr. Ajay Israni, division chief of nephrology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is also one of the founders of the Texas Society of Nephrology and a member of both the American Society of Nephrology and American Society of Transplantation. Dr. Israni received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Rutgers University and his Doctor of Medicine from New York University School of Medicine.
Dr. Matthew T. Smith, a senior executive medical director at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, brings his expertise as a board-certified nephrologist and internist to the task force. He is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of various medical organizations such as the National Kidney Foundation and American Society for Nephrology. In addition to his medical background, Dr. Smith is also involved in his community as an advisory board member for Scouting America and has held leadership positions in the Boy Scouts of America. He received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch.

The final member appointed to the task force is Dr. Donald Wesson, a physician and professor of medicine at Dell Medical School - UT Austin and UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is a member of the American Society for Nephrology and has an impressive educational background, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Doctor of Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine, and a Master of Business Administration from UT Austin.
These four individuals will serve on the Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force for terms set by Governor Abbott. Their expertise and dedication to improving kidney health will be crucial in implementing the state's plan for managing this chronic disease. The task force also aims to educate healthcare professionals on best practices for preventing and treating chronic kidney disease.
