Texas: Governor Abbott Announces SpaceX Expansion In Grimes County
Rezul News/10742258
~ In a major announcement today, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that SpaceX will be constructing a vertically integrated semiconductor fabrication plant in Grimes County. This project, known as Terafab, is estimated to bring in a capital investment of over $16.8 billion and create 3,000 new jobs in the first phase alone. To support this endeavor, the state has extended a Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) grant of $30 million to SpaceX. Additionally, the facility has been designated as a qualified project under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program.
Governor Abbott expressed his excitement for this expansion of SpaceX's investment in Texas, stating that "Texas is where big ideas grow even bigger." He congratulated the company on their decision to build the first-of-its-kind Terafab facility in the state and highlighted its potential to accelerate chip production at an unprecedented scale. He also emphasized the positive impact this project will have on job creation and economic opportunities for generations of Texans.
The decision to select Texas for this project was based on several factors including the state's business-friendly climate, skilled workforce, robust infrastructure, and logistical advantages. With its global headquarters already located in Texas and a significant advanced manufacturing presence, SpaceX saw great potential for growth in the Lone Star State. The 100-million-square-foot Terafab facility will consolidate all aspects of semiconductor production under one roof and create various job opportunities such as engineers, technicians, and plant operators.

SpaceX Founder & CEO Elon Musk shared his enthusiasm for this new venture by stating that "the foundations for the most exciting future are being built right here in Texas." He highlighted how this project will complement their existing facilities in Starbase and Bastrop by bringing cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities to America. Musk also emphasized that this project will not only create high-paying jobs but also enable them to produce AI chips at scale for use on Earth and in space.
Local officials in Grimes County also expressed their excitement for this project and the positive impact it will have on the community. Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth III stated that connecting a company like SpaceX to develop an industrial site in their county "makes all the sense in the world." Similarly, Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sarah Borowicz and Iola Independent School District Superintendent Jeff Dyer both expressed their support for this project and its potential to benefit their students and communities.
The Greater Brazos Partnership, a regional economic development organization, also welcomed this investment and thanked the state for its leadership in advancing this project. President & CEO Tom Johnson stated that the region is ready to support this project by providing the necessary workforce and infrastructure.

The program aims to attract large, capital-intensive economic development projects that create new jobs and bring new capital investment while ensuring transparency and accountability through robust reporting.
With this groundbreaking project, Texas continues to solidify its position as a leader in innovation and economic growth. The Terafab facility will not only bring significant economic benefits but also pave the way for future advancements in technology.
