Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Over $4.7 Million In Workforce Development Grants

~ In a move to support the development of in-demand, high-earning occupations, Governor Greg Abbott has announced 15 grants totaling over $4.7 million to Texas public community colleges and technical schools. These grants, administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), aim to provide resources for educational programs that lead students towards successful careers.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of providing clear pathways for Texas students to secure well-paying jobs. He stated, "These grants give community colleges and technical schools the resources they need to prepare students for in-demand jobs in healthcare, technology, and construction." He also highlighted how these programs equip students with the necessary skills to succeed and contribute to the state's strong economy.

The grants are being provided through two competitions: Texas Invests in Meaningful Employment (TIME) and Texas Reskilling and Upskilling through Education (TRUE) Pathways Design & Planning. These competitions fund career and technical education programs as well as the development of innovative courses that align with workforce needs. The goal is to assist students in quickly upskilling or reskilling for jobs that offer a strong career pathway and return on investment.

By aligning educational credentials with high-demand occupations, Texas is strategically strengthening its economy and building a strong talent pool for highly-skilled jobs in sectors such as healthcare, technology, and construction.

Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser expressed his gratitude for the funding of these workforce initiatives. He stated, "Not only do they make a difference to students, but they keep college programs vibrant and relevant while fortifying the economies of urban and rural communities across Texas."

In 2025, Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 1786 into law, which directed THECB, along with other agencies and industry partners, to develop and expand secondary and postsecondary career and technical education programs that align with job demand. The TIME and TRUE Pathways grants are helping fulfill these goals by supporting the development of new or expansion of existing career and technical education programs that offer credentials closely matched to workforce needs.

The TIME grant recipients include Alamo Community College District, Amarillo College, Cisco College, Hill College, Navarro College, Northeast Texas Community College, San Jacinto Community College, and Texas State Technical College. On the other hand, the TRUE Pathways grant recipients include Lamar State College-Port Arthur, McLennan Community College, North Central Texas College, Panola College, South Texas College, Tarrant County Community College District, and Texas State Technical College.

Governor Abbott and the Texas Legislature established the TRUE Grant Program in 2021 to expand short-duration, high-value credential programs that are aligned with industry needs. Interested parties can learn more about these grant programs on THECB's website.
