Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Construction Of Lubbock Psychiatric Center
Rezul News/10709766
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is embarking on the construction of a new psychiatric center in Lubbock. The project, which has been approved by Governor Abbott and the 88th Texas Legislature with a budget of $121 million, is expected to be completed by 2027.
According to Governor Abbott, this new hospital will play a crucial role in increasing access to mental healthcare for Texans across the state. He believes that it will provide high-quality treatment for individuals in the South Plains region, closer to their homes. The governor expressed his gratitude towards the Texas Health and Human Services Commission for their efforts in expanding and improving mental health services for rural communities and all Texans.
Scott Schalchlin, Deputy Executive Commissioner for HHSC Health and Specialty Care System, also emphasized the importance of investing in state hospitals. He stated that such investments lead to stronger individuals and healthier communities. Schalchlin believes that patients at the Lubbock Psychiatric Center will receive top-notch care in a secure and modern facility designed to promote recovery and healing.

The new hospital will cover an area of 108,430 square feet and have a maximum capacity of 50 beds. It will be located near Highway 84 off Peach Avenue. The design of the hospital incorporates the latest standards in mental healthcare to ensure optimal treatment for patients. Additionally, strict security measures such as perimeter fencing, video surveillance, alarms, electronic monitors, and increased staff presence will be implemented to guarantee the safety of patients, staff, and the community.
Since 2017, Governor Abbott and the Texas Legislature have allocated over $2.5 billion towards replacing, renovating or expanding state hospitals across Texas. Construction is already underway in Amarillo, Dallas, Wichita Falls, and Terrell while two other projects are currently being planned. In 2024, HHSC held grand openings for replacement state hospitals in Austin and San Antonio.
