Texas: Governor Abbott Announces $5.5 Million In Grants To Boost Primary Medical Care
Rezul News/10740292
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that three Statewide Preceptorship Program (SPP) grants have been awarded to professional medical societies in Texas, totaling $5.5 million. These grants will support hands-on training for medical students in family medicine, general internal medicine, and pediatrics, including pediatric subspecialties.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of providing quality primary care to Texas families, stating that these grants will give medical students early exposure to practicing physicians and equip them with the necessary skills to bring this care to rural and underserved communities. He believes that the Statewide Preceptorship Program will provide students with mentorship and real-world tools needed to expand access to healthcare for Texans across the state.
The main goal of these grants is to strengthen Texas' primary care physician workforce, particularly in rural and medically underserved areas. By introducing students to primary care early on in their medical education, they will gain a better understanding of the daily responsibilities and impact of primary care physicians.

Typically, medical students participate in the preceptorship program during the summer between their first and second years of medical school. This allows them to gain hands-on experience by working alongside practicing physicians in various primary care specialties. The program also encourages students to complete their preceptorships in communities outside of their medical school's geographic area, exposing them to new perspectives and potentially influencing them to pursue primary care roles in high-need regions.
Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser praised the Statewide Preceptorship Program as an example of leveraging existing workforce expertise towards building new healthcare talent across Texas. He believes that by providing students with valuable hands-on experience and mentoring in real-world healthcare settings, the program is essential for expanding the network of primary care doctors dedicated to improving lives across all areas of Texas.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) administers the Statewide Preceptorship Program, which was established in 1978. The grants awarded for the 2026-2027 cycle are as follows: $1,941,708 to the Texas Pediatric Society, $1,616,666 to the Texas Chapter of The American College of Physicians, and $1,941,709 to the Texas Academy of Family Physicians.
