Texas: Governor Abbott Announces $2.3 Million In Grant Funding For Electric Reliability In The Panhandle
Rezul News/10738837
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced a significant grant of $2.3 million from the Texas Energy Fund (TxEF) to Greenbelt Electric Cooperative, Inc. (GEC) in order to enhance electric reliability for its members in the Texas Panhandle region. This grant will be used to fund technology improvements that will strengthen the utility's electricity distribution system and improve weatherization.
According to Governor Abbott, Texas is a leader in energy because of its continuous investment in reliable power and technological upgrades. He believes that this grant will not only improve infrastructure but also ensure that residents in the Panhandle have access to efficient and dependable power.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) Chairman Thomas Gleeson also expressed his support for this project, stating that deploying distribution line technology in rural areas is crucial for reducing safety risks. He believes that these remote capabilities will improve emergency detection and response times, ultimately providing greater protection for Texans.

Randy White, General Manager and CEO of GEC, expressed gratitude for receiving this state grant as a member-owned cooperative. He stated that this funding will help strengthen their system, enhance reliability, and continue providing safe and dependable service to their members. White also mentioned that this project aligns with their wildfire mitigation plan, which aims to better protect their members.
The project will benefit GEC's service territory, including Armstrong, Childress, Collingsworth, Donley, Gray, and Wheeler Counties. The key improvements include installing nearly 70 electronic power line and substation reclosers - remote devices that can quickly shut off power in targeted areas during emergencies and restore it just as quickly. This measure can prevent lines from sparking fires and shorten outage times.
The PUCT administers the TxEF Outside ERCOT Grant Program, which provides funding for projects aimed at improving electric reliability and resiliency for Texans served by electric utilities outside the ERCOT region. More information about this program and others offered by TxEF can be found on the PUCT's website.
