Structural Channels vs Posts: The Balustrade Base Design Decision That Changes Everything
Rezul News/10738343
When architects and developers specify a balustrade for a roof terrace, they typically specify by performance: height, glass type, wind load resistance, finish. What they almost never specify is the base fixing geometry.
SURREY, U.K. - Rezul -- A rarely discussed design choice between post-based and continuous structural channel balustrade systems can have a significant impact on roof membrane performance, according to BalcoDeck®.
Although both systems support glass balustrades, they transfer structural loads in very different ways. Post-based systems concentrate loads at individual fixing points, creating higher stress concentrations where the balustrade meets the roof. Continuous channel systems distribute loads along the full length of the channel, reducing stress at any single point.
Where penetrative fixings are used, these concentrated loads can increase the risk of membrane damage and long-term waterproofing failures.
BalcoDeck® also highlights that glass panel size directly affects the base moment - the turning force generated by the balustrade. Larger and taller glass panels create greater structural loads, particularly in channel systems, yet these calculations are often not fully reflected in fixing and membrane detailing.

BalcoDeck® provides a non-penetrative structural platform that supports both post and channel balustrade systems entirely above the waterproof membrane. Structural calculations are carried out during the design stage, ensuring the platform is designed for the specific glass specification and load profile without compromising the roof membrane.
Effi Wolff, founder of BalcoDeck®, said:
"Most specifications don't state whether the balustrade should be post-based or channel-based. The contractor often decides, usually on cost. But these systems behave very differently structurally, and that directly affects the stresses placed on the waterproof membrane. It's a question specifiers should be asking far more often."
BalcoDeck® recommends architects and structural engineers request confirmation of the balustrade type, the calculated base moments for the specified glass panels, and how those loads will be resolved at the roof interface before approving any roof terrace design.
