~ Spokane Police Department Collaborates with Multiple Agencies for Successful High Visibility Enforcement Event at Hoopfest

Over the weekend, the Spokane Police Department joined forces with several other law enforcement agencies to conduct a high visibility enforcement (HVE) event in support of the annual Hoopfest event in Spokane. The HVE aimed to target and address dangerous driving behaviors such as DUI, speeding, and reckless driving.

The two-day event, which took place on Friday and Saturday, involved officers, troopers, and deputies from the Spokane Police Department, Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Spokane Valley Police Department, Cheney Police Department, Airway Heights Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office, Whitman County Sheriff's Office, and Yakima Police Department.

As a result of their efforts, a total of 133 speeding tickets were issued along with 18 tickets for using cellphones while driving. Additionally, 27 drivers were cited for not having insurance and 11 were arrested for driving while suspended. The HVE also led to 42 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI), with at least half of those being drug or drug-alcohol related. Furthermore, 13 individuals were arrested for outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants.

One notable incident during the HVE involved an attempt to elude law enforcement by a suspected DUI driver. The driver initially fled from an officer during a traffic stop but was later located with the help of the Spokane Police Department Air Support Unit (ASU). The driver was subsequently arrested and identified as Daly M. Tom (29), who was booked into Spokane County Jail for DUI and attempting to elude law enforcement.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of all participating agencies, there were no reports of serious or fatal collisions in Spokane over Hoopfest weekend. The Spokane Police Department expressed their gratitude towards their partner agencies for helping ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all participants.

Drone footage of the eluding incident can be viewed for further details. The Spokane Police Department remains committed to promoting safe driving behaviors and will continue to work with other agencies to keep the community safe.
