Spokane: Impacts For Final Stretch of Construction Season

~ Spokane City is continuing its efforts to maintain and preserve the decks of four bridges, while also beginning a new project on Washington Street. The city's Communications Manager, Kirstin Davis, has urged drivers to plan ahead and be prepared for frequent traffic changes as these necessary projects take place.

Starting on Monday, September 21st, crews will begin resurfacing the northbound lanes of the Greene Street Bridge over the Spokane River. This phase of the project will involve replacing deteriorating concrete and repairing or replacing deck joints. As a result, northbound Greene Street will be closed with a detour in place and southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane. The closure is expected to last until approximately November 15th.

Drivers can expect significant slowdowns in this area and are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible. Local access on Greene Street will still be available between Carlisle Avenue and Ermina Avenue.

In addition to the Greene Street Bridge project, crews will also begin work on the Havana Street Bridge starting on Monday, September 21st. This project involves installing a polyester concrete overlay and repairing deck joints. Havana Street will be closed between Broadway Avenue and Mission Avenue for the duration of this project, which is expected to be completed by October 16th.

Drivers traveling northbound will be detoured at Broadway Avenue, while those heading southbound will be detoured at Mission Avenue. These detours are necessary for crews to safely complete their work over railroad tracks.

Another project that drivers should be aware of is the grind and overlay project on Washington Street between 8th Avenue and 3rd Avenue. This work is set to begin on Tuesday, September 22nd and includes curb ramp replacements for ADA accessibility, stormwater system upgrades, and replacement of a water system distribution main.

As a result of this project, Washington Street will be closed between Sumner Avenue and 7th Avenue starting on Monday, September 21st. The curb lanes on Washington Street between 8th Avenue and 6th Avenue will also be closed, as well as 8th Avenue between McClellan Street and Washington Street. Drivers can expect significant slowdowns in this area, especially near medical facilities and Lewis & Clark High School.

Local access will still be maintained for businesses in the area. The project has an accelerated construction schedule and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
