Spokane: Firefighters Contain Fire After Car Crashes Into Home
Rezul News/10725254
January 15, 2026 ~ Last night, a vehicle crashed into a home on the 1400 block of East Courtland Avenue, causing a fire that extended into the residence. According to Spokane Fire PIO Justin de Ruyter, the incident occurred at 10:22 p.m. and additional information indicated that the driver was out of the vehicle.
Upon receiving the report, firefighters from Truck 2 and Engine 2 in the Bemiss neighborhood, along with Engine 15 from the Hillyard neighborhood, were dispatched to the scene. They arrived within four minutes and confirmed flames on the exterior of the home.
A rapid search of the residence was conducted by firefighters from Truck 2, who confirmed that there were no occupants inside. Crews also checked neighboring homes and found that the woman who was initially reported to be inside was safe at a neighbor's residence.

During fire suppression operations, it was discovered that the vehicle had damaged the home's natural gas meter. However, due to an Excess Flow Valve equipped in the system, which automatically shut off the gas supply, further escalation was prevented.
Both the driver of the vehicle and homeowner were evaluated by paramedics from American Medical Response Spokane. It was determined that neither required hospital transport. The driver was subsequently taken into custody by Spokane Police Department.
Members of the Regional Technical Rescue Team assessed the structure and found no risk of structural collapse. Thanks to prompt notification and rapid response, fire damage was limited. Avista also responded to repair the damaged gas line and valve.
Photos taken at the scene show extensive damage to both the vehicle and home (see Photo 1 and Photo 2). The cause of this incident is still under investigation by authorities.
