Spokane: Daughters of the American Revolution Dedicate "Never Forget Garden" in Riverfront Park to Honor Veterans

~ Spokane, Washington - The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) - Jonas Babcock Chapter has recently completed a project to honor veterans and celebrate America's 250th anniversary. The project, which involved planting 25 cherry trees and establishing a new Never Forget Garden in Riverfront Park, will be officially dedicated on Friday, September 25 at 3 P.M.

The dedication ceremony will feature remarks from DAR President General Ginnie Sebastian Storage and will be held at the park's existing Vietnam Veterans Memorial above the Washington Street land bridge. Free shuttle service will be provided from the park's Washington St. parking lot to the dedication site.

The Never Forget Garden was created in collaboration with the Spokane #1 Sons of the American Revolution as part of a nationwide initiative to honor veterans and service members. The garden features 334 plants that will bloom in red, white, and blue, symbolizing our nation's enduring commitment to honoring their service and preserving their legacy for future generations.

In addition to the Never Forget Garden, the DAR also planted 25 Kwanza cherry trees in honor of America's 250th anniversary. Fifteen of these trees are located alongside the garden, while ten are planted in the Red Wagon Meadow using two flower beds from Expo '74.

Anne Oakes, project lead for DAR's New Horizon Capstone project, expressed her excitement about how this project has exceeded her original vision. "My vision was to plant 25 cherry trees to commemorate America's 250th anniversary, but it has grown into something much bigger," she said. Oakes also mentioned that during a tour with Spokane Park Board member Gerry Sperling earlier this year, they decided to expand the project to include a Never Forget Garden next to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The City of Spokane Parks & Recreation director Garrett Jones also expressed his gratitude towards DAR for their commitment and vision in creating this beautiful space for veterans and service members. "This garden stands as a heartfelt tribute to our brave veterans and service members," he said.

The project was made possible through the generous funding of the Daughters of the American Revolution - Jonas Babcock Chapter, The Home Depot Foundation, Gerry and Bill Sperling, Spokane Parks Foundation, and the U.S. Forest Service Department of Agriculture.
