South Bend: City Receives Federal Funding to Improve Sidewalks Near Schools

Rezul News/10736200
May 29, 2026 ~ South Bend, IN - The City of South Bend has recently announced that they have secured federal funding to improve the sidewalks near Kennedy Primary Academy and Muessel Elementary School. The construction has already begun and is expected to be completed by mid-August.

The city has partnered with Rieth-Riley Construction Company and Milestone Contractors North to reconstruct approximately 3.25 miles of sidewalk and 60 ADA curb ramps near the two schools. This project is estimated to cost $3 million, with 80% of the cost being covered by the grant and the remaining 20% being funded by local funds.

The federal grant was obtained through Safe Routes to School, a national program that aims to make it safer and easier for students to walk and bike to school. This is not the first time that South Bend has received funding from this program, as previous grants have been used for similar projects near other local schools such as Coquillard Primary Center, Harrison Primary Center, LaSalle Intermediate Academy, Lincoln Elementary School, Marquette Primary Montessori Academy, Monroe Elementary School, Perley Fine Arts Academy, and Studebaker School.

Residents are advised to only use open sidewalks and avoid walking through construction zones or closed sidewalk areas. Street and sidewalk closures will be clearly marked throughout the project area for safety purposes.

With these improvements, students at Kennedy Primary Academy and Muessel Elementary School will have safer routes when walking or biking to school. The City of South Bend is committed to creating a safe environment for its residents, especially for its younger population.
