New Book Brings Decades of Clinical Research to the Addiction Recovery Crisis

EFT for Addiction by Dr. Adriana Popescu Offers Evidence-Based Tapping Protocol Shown to Reduce Cravings, Regulate the Brain, and Break the Cycle of Relapse
PETALUMA, Calif. - Rezul -- As opioid deaths continue to mount, and behavioral addictions proliferate at epidemic rates, a clinical resource is challenging the assumption that conventional treatment is enough. EFT for Addiction, by psychologist Dr. Adriana Popescu, marshals over three decades of peer-reviewed research to argue that Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), a tapping-based intervention rooted in acupressure and neuroscience can address the underlying mechanisms of addiction that talk therapy alone cannot reach.
The book arrives at a moment of urgent need. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 48 million Americans (17 percent of the population) struggle with substance use disorders. Relapse rates under conventional treatment average 75 percent in the first year. Dr. Popescu contends that traditional cognitive-behavioral approaches often fail because they address the intellectual understanding of addiction without resolving the physiological, trauma-driven states that sustain it.

"Addiction is fundamentally a disorder of emotional regulation and traumatic stress," says Dr. Popescu. "EFT works directly with the limbic system—it sends a deactivating signal to the amygdala, the brain's threat center, that interrupts the craving cycle at a neurological level. That is something a conversation simply cannot do."
The science supporting this claim is substantial. Harvard Medical School research on acupoint stimulation found that tapping specific meridian points sends electrical signals that shift the nervous system from sympathetic arousal (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic calm. Studies have documented measurable effects including decreased cortisol levels, normalized brainwave patterns, improved heart rate variability, and changes in gene expression associated with better mental health. In fMRI trials, EFT tapping produced demonstrable reductions in activity in the limbic brain regions associated with craving and addiction.

EFT for Addiction draws on outcome data from Dr. Popescu's own clinical work at a women's dual-diagnosis treatment program. Data collected over a 3.5-year period across 123 clients showed dramatic reductions in symptomology during treatment: depression scores fell from 79% at intake to 16% at discharge; anxiety from 73% to 8%; trauma symptoms from 76% to 30%; and suicidality from 53% to 11%—all statistically significant.
The book includes case histories from internationally recognized EFT practitioners. Published by Energy Psychology Press, EFT for Addiction is designed for both clinicians and individuals in recovery. Step-by-step exercises, clinical scripts, and detailed case studies make the evidence actionable for practitioners across all treatment settings.
