Rezul News/10721850
~ Mesa, AZ - The city of Mesa is inviting residents to join in the celebration of the grand opening of the new Gateway Library on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. Located at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway, this state-of-the-art facility is Mesa's first new full-service library in 30 years and offers innovative spaces and programs for the entire community.
Mayor Mark Freeman expressed his excitement for the opening, stating that the Gateway Library is a beautifully designed facility that reflects what it means for Mesa to be a full-service city. He also expressed his gratitude to Mesa's voters for supporting the bond issue that made this project possible.
Spanning over 28,000 square feet, the Gateway Library features an open concept design with rows of books under a high ceiling and bright lights. It boasts amenities such as a multipurpose room, THINKspot collaborative makerspace, digital art wall, study rooms, hold lockers, a teen lounge and robust children's area. The building also includes outdoor spaces such as reading patios and a plaza for events. Its exceptional design has already been recognized with a 2024 Library Interior Design Award from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the American Library Association (ALA), making it a striking landmark in its own right.

In addition to its impressive design, the Gateway Library is also certified as an Autism Center™ through IBCCES. It includes a dedicated sensory room with specialized lighting, color palettes, acoustics and furnishings that support neurodiversity. This aligns with Mesa's commitment to being the first Autism Certified City.
Vice Mayor Somers expressed her excitement for this milestone in their community, stating that libraries are essential to building strong, educated and connected neighborhoods. She believes that Southeast Mesa has been waiting patiently for a resource like this and is thrilled that families, students and lifelong learners will now have access to a world-class library close to home.
Polly Bonnett, Mesa Public Library Director, also shared her excitement for the opening of the Gateway Library. She described it as a beacon of creativity and opportunity for all and can't wait for residents to see all that it has to offer.
The grand opening ceremony will be followed by family-friendly activities until 2 p.m. These include henna, face painting, bubble artists, a photo booth, costumed book characters, live music and interactive stations from various City of Mesa departments. Attendees can also participate in a Gateway Library Passport activity, exploring the library's features and earning prizes along the way.
