Mayor Wu Shares Storm Update; Boston Public Schools Closed Tuesday, February 24

~ Boston, MA - The city of Boston has announced that schools will remain closed for an additional day as crews work to clear sidewalks and widen main roadways. This decision was made in order to ensure the safety of children, families, and the 700 bus fleet as they navigate through the streets.

According to a press release from the city, Boston Public Library branches, senior centers, and Boston Centers for Youth & Families will reopen at 12 p.m. tomorrow, February 24. However, all other municipal buildings and city services will operate on regular hours.

The snow emergency and parking ban currently in effect will remain in place until at least tomorrow at 6 p.m. Residents who have parked their cars in participating discounted garages are advised to remove them within two hours after the ban is lifted to avoid being charged regular rates. In addition, residents are reminded that space savers should be removed within 48 hours after the end of the snow emergency. The use of space savers is strictly prohibited in the South End and Bay Village neighborhoods. Any space savers found violating these rules may be collected and discarded by the Public Works Department (PWD).

Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her gratitude towards all city teams who have been working tirelessly during this nor'easter. She also urged residents to continue staying safe and warm, look out for their neighbors, and avoid unnecessary travel to support public works and public safety teams.

As more snow is forecasted for later this week, Mayor Wu emphasized the importance of shoveling sidewalks and crosswalks in front of properties to ensure everyone's safety. Residents are encouraged to report any issues through the 311 app.

Trash and recycling collection will also operate on a delayed schedule this week with a one-day delay for all neighborhoods. Residents can visit boston.gov/trash-day for updated information on curbside collection.

For those in need of shelter during the storm, the Boston Public Health Commission's emergency shelters are open 24/7. Amnesty is also in place for those with nonviolent restrictions when temperatures drop below freezing. Men can access shelter at the 112 Southampton Street Shelter, while women should go to the Woods Mullen Shelter at 794 Massachusetts Ave.

Last night, nearly 600 guests were sheltered by the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), and today, 250 people have utilized BPHC shelters to stay safe and warm. BPHC has also prepared close to 1,300 meals since the start of the winter emergency to keep individuals nourished and indoors. Outreach teams will continue to check on people and offer transportation to shelters and programs throughout the day and into the late night.

Residents are reminded to call 911 for any individuals experiencing homelessness or vulnerable individuals who appear immobile, disoriented, or underdressed for the weather. For non-emergencies, residents can call 311.

Once the storm has passed, property owners are responsible for shoveling sidewalks within a 42" path of travel. The city will issue violations to those who do not maintain safe sidewalks or shovel snow into the street. Residents have until 10 a.m. tomorrow (three hours after sunrise) to clear their sidewalks before reporting any unshoveled areas through 311.

The Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services will also be hosting citywide snow shoveling meet-ups tomorrow where volunteers can come together to help clear sidewalks, curb ramps, and other areas of concern during snow emergencies.
