In a press conference held today, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced his appointment of Dr. Garth Walker as the new Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH). With a background in emergency medicine, healthcare administration, and public health leadership, Dr. Walker brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

Mayor Johnson praised Dr. Walker's dedication to promoting health equity and addressing health disparities in Chicago. "Dr. Garth Walker has dedicated his career to ensuring every Chicagoan has the opportunity to live a healthy life, regardless of the neighborhood they call home," said Mayor Johnson.

Dr. Walker's impressive resume includes serving as Chief Medical Officer for Rush Health, where he oversaw a network of physicians and hospitals focused on delivering high-quality care to over 160,000 patients in the Chicago region. He also served as Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he played a crucial role in expanding vaccination efforts and addressing health inequities.

As Commissioner of CDPH, Dr. Walker will be responsible for overseeing the department's operations, programs, and services. His leadership will support CDPH's work with community partners and City agencies to promote health, prevent disease, reduce public health risks, and expand access to critical care.

"I've spent my career committed to centering a public health approach that addresses the social and economic conditions that shape people's health and wellbeing," said Dr. Garth Walker in response to his appointment. "As someone who grew up in Chicago, it's an honor to serve as Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health and support the Mayor's vision for a healthier Chicago."

Dr. Walker is no stranger to accolades for his work in healthcare and public service. He has been recognized by Crain's Chicago Business' 40 Under 40, Modern Healthcare's 40 Under 40, and the National Minority Quality Forum's 40 Under 40. He has also received honors from the University of Illinois Department of Economics and the University of Illinois College of Medicine.

A native Chicagoan, Dr. Walker grew up in Hyde Park and attended Chicago Public Schools before spending two years at a boarding school in Jamaica. He is also a committed civic leader, serving on the boards of the Polk Bros. Foundation, Thresholds, and the Chicago Urban League.

Mayor Johnson's appointment of Dr. Walker is subject to approval by the City Council. If approved, Dr. Walker will bring his expertise and passion for promoting health equity to his new role as Commissioner of CDPH.
