Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach Airport to Receive $37 Million in Upgrades for 2028 Olympics
Long Beach, CA - Long Beach Airport is set to undergo a major transformation with $37 million in infrastructure upgrades. The project, approved by the Long Beach City Council with a unanimous vote of 7 to 0 during their October 14th meeting, aims to modernize the passenger concourse and enhance the overall travel experience just in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.
According to Mayor Rex Richardson, this investment will not only improve the airport's indoor and outdoor facilities but also create nearly 200 local construction jobs. "Our award-winning Airport is one of the best in the nation, offering travelers a uniquely Long Beach experience," said Mayor Richardson. "As we plan to welcome the world for the 2028 Games, bold investments are being made to ensure every visitor's first impression reflects the hospitality of our City."
The Passenger Concourse Enhancement Project will address aging infrastructure that was first constructed in 2012 and further elevate Long Beach Airport's reputation as a relaxed, Southern California travel experience. Planned enhancements include improvements to passenger circulation, upgraded seating with more electrical chargers, an open-air garden area at the exterior of the north concourse, and more wayfinding signage and flight information displays.

Additionally, there will be mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades including replacement of air-conditioning components and updated restrooms. Sustainability upgrades such as LED lighting conversions will also be implemented.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 and be completed by 2027. However, there will be no impacts on commercial flights during this time and gate access will still be available.
Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr emphasized that this project is not just about aesthetics but also about expanding Long Beach Airport's reputation as a premier airport. "After more than a century of service, this project ensures LGB keeps soaring as one of Southern California's most welcoming gateways," said Councilwoman Kerr.
Fourth District Councilman Daryl Supernaw also expressed his support for the project, stating that it highlights the City's commitment to investing in Long Beach Airport's future. "For the 2028 Games and beyond, these concourse improvements showcase our dedication to keeping LGB a modern and welcoming place for generations of travelers to come," said Councilman Supernaw.
The Passenger Concourse Enhancement Project has an estimated total cost of $37 million, with $24 million funded through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Infrastructure Grant program under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The remaining cost will be covered by Airport revenue, with no local tax dollars utilized. PCL Construction Services, Inc. was awarded the construction contract valued at $28 million after a competitive recruitment process.

Former Mayor of Long Beach and current U.S. Congressman Robert Garcia expressed his excitement for this investment in the airport. "This investment will modernize our Airport to make it more sustainable, safer and efficient for years to come," said Congressman Garcia. "I'm eager to see how these upgrades will improve the travel experience for folks, support businesses and create good jobs for our community."
Airport Director Cynthia Guidry also expressed her gratitude towards the FAA for their significant investment in this project. She stated that it will ensure Long Beach Airport remains a premier travel destination and gateway to Southern California with enhanced passenger comfort, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
The Passenger Concourse Enhancement Project is expected to generate 190 construction jobs on top of the already significant economic impact of Long Beach Airport. The airport currently generates an estimated $9 billion in annual economic output and supports 42,000 jobs as a key asset for the City and region at large.
