Logistics Expert Asks A Question Biology Has Overlooked: How Evolution Assembles Coordinated Novelty
Rezul News/10743055
A radical extension to evolutionary theory, presented in a new book, asks not whether evolution happened, but how Nature assembled the coordinated innovations that made it possible.
HAZLETON, Pa. - Rezul -- The jewel wasp precisely alters a cockroach's nervous system, leading the living host to a burrow as food for its offspring. For author and logistics expert Lloyd A. Merriam, the remarkable thing isn't just the behavior itself, but everything evolution had to coordinate to make it possible.
This logistics problem is the focus of Noctogenesis: Evolution's Quantum Secret, Merriam's proposed alternative mechanism for the arrival of coordinated biological novelty.
"In logistics, it isn't enough that all the necessary parts eventually exist," Merriam said. "They must arrive in the right form, place, sequence, and time."
Merriam accepts evolution as fact but challenges whether random genetic variation and natural selection fully explain innovations requiring multiple interdependent anatomical and behavioral changes. Natural selection preserves traits that improve reproductive success. But what happens when an innovation depends upon several "co-requisite elements," whose individual precursors provide no advantage?

Noctogenesis examines this through examples like a tiger moth jamming bat echolocation, and a juvenile planthopper with interlocking biological gears. These force a difficult question: how does a viable sequence of individually selectable steps reach the finished adaptation?
"Evolution has a logistics problem," Merriam notes. "Every necessary component has to arise in the right sequence, coordinate with the others, and remain viable—before natural selection ever gets the finished innovation to reward."
Merriam's proposed non-classical mechanism suggests coordinated innovations can be assembled latently before their phenotypic expression. Hence the name Noctogenesis—literally, "creation in the dark." If incomplete components cannot independently survive natural selection, their assembly must occur where selection cannot dismantle them.
The argument ultimately leads to quantum physics, asking whether intrinsic quantum indeterminacy plays a generative role in evolution. Importantly, Noctogenesis invokes neither creationism nor Intelligent Design, proposing instead that the appearance of design arises from properties inherent in Nature itself.
