Kansas: KC Water encourages customers to protect pipes ahead of weekend freeze

Rezul News/10719823
~ As the fall season settles in, temperatures in the Kansas City Metro Area are expected to drop below freezing on Saturday night and into Sunday morning. This sudden change in weather may come as a surprise to many, as September and October have been unusually warm. However, KC Water is urging all customers to take proactive measures to protect their homes from potential pipe breaks.

According to KC Water, even the smallest steps can make a big difference in preventing pipe breaks. One of the most important things homeowners can do is to wrap exposed pipes with insulation or heating tape. This will help keep the pipes warm and prevent them from freezing.

In addition, it is crucial to stop frigid air from blowing directly onto water pipes. Homeowners should check for any broken windows or open doors in their basements that could be letting cold air in. It is also important to never use an open flame, such as a candle or lighter, to thaw out frozen pipes.

For pipes that are located near outside walls, KC Water recommends insulating them with material such as foam or insulation tape. This will provide an extra layer of protection against the cold.

Other helpful tips include detaching outdoor garden hoses and making sure outside spigots are fully closed. Keeping cabinet doors open can also help warm up pipes by allowing heat from the room to circulate around them. And for those who live in extremely cold areas, leaving a small stream of water running from a faucet can help prevent pipes from freezing.

In case of a pipe break, KC Water advises customers to locate their water shut-off valve ahead of time so they know where it is located. If the valve does not work during an emergency situation, customers should immediately call KC Water Dispatch at either 311 or 816-513-1313 for assistance with an emergency shut-off.

Taking these precautions now can save homeowners from the headache and expense of dealing with a broken pipe during the cold snap. KC Water is reminding all customers to be proactive and take these simple steps to protect their homes and prevent potential pipe breaks.
