Juneau: CBJ Emergency Programs Provides Avalanche Risk and Community Readiness Update
Rezul News/10723900
~ Juneau, Alaska - The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is closely monitoring the current avalanche conditions in the area with the help of qualified avalanche professionals and agency partners. These partners include the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (Alaska DOT&PF) and the National Weather Service Juneau (NWS Juneau).
As of December 30, 2025, observations from Alaska DOT&PF have revealed heavy snowfall, strong winds, and warming at higher elevations. These conditions have led to an increased risk of avalanches. While no widespread avalanche activity has been observed yet, heavy snowfall is expected to continue over the next few days. As a result, avalanche professionals are continuously monitoring the situation.
Residents are urged to stay informed about their personal avalanche risk by signing up for emergency alerts on juneau.gov. It is important to note that conditions can change rapidly due to weather, snowpack, and terrain. Avalanches can occur naturally or be triggered by additional loading, warming, human activity or other changes.

To monitor current avalanche advisory levels in Juneau, residents can visit bit.ly/CBJavalanche. This is a serious concern for the community as some areas are located beneath known avalanche paths.
In order to stay updated on urban avalanche conditions in Juneau, CBJ will be sharing updates and additional information through their website juneau.gov and emergency alerts if necessary. Residents can sign up for these alerts at bit.ly/CBJAlerts. The Alaska DOT&PF will also provide updates on their website 511.alaska.gov.
Residents living in or near areas with potential avalanche hazards should remain vigilant and alert to any changes in conditions. They should also follow road closures and any instructions from authorities regarding avalanche control operations. In case of escalating conditions, CBJ will communicate via emergency alerts about protective actions that need to be taken.

It is worth noting that CBJ has changed its approach to avalanche advisories this season. In previous years, they mainly focused on issuing forecasts for people recreating in steep terrain. However, this season they are focusing on preparing and notifying the community about potential avalanche risks. Residents should expect to receive updates from CBJ about when they should limit travel, avoid certain areas, or be prepared to leave their homes.
Similar to their approach for Glacial Lake Outburst Flood communications, the Emergency Programs division is working closely with qualified partners who can assess and forecast avalanche hazards. CBJ's role is to integrate this expert information and communicate the risk in a clear and consistent manner. They also aim to help residents understand how to prepare and respond in case of an avalanche. More information can be found at juneau.org/emergency/current-advisory.
