Idaho Falls Fire Department Reminds Residents of Fireworks Ordinances and Safety Guidelines

~ As the Fourth of July approaches, the Idaho Falls Fire Department (IFFD) is reminding residents to follow local fireworks ordinances and practice firework safety. With America's 250th anniversary being celebrated this year, larger celebrations and extended firework displays are expected, providing more opportunities for the community to gather throughout the holiday weekend. However, while fireworks are a cherished tradition, improper use can quickly lead to serious injuries, property damage, and fires.

According to Idaho Falls City Code, "safe and sane" fireworks may only be sold and purchased within city limits between June 23 and July 5. These types of fireworks include non-aerial, ground-based items such as fountains and sparklers. Aerial fireworks remain illegal for personal use and may only be discharged by licensed professionals with a permit approved by the fire marshal. This includes items such as roman candles, skyrockets, aerial shells, mortars, and other fireworks designed to launch into the air or explode.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for all, residents are encouraged to attend one of the many professional fireworks displays planned throughout the region. These displays offer a safe way to celebrate while reducing the risk of injuries, property damage, and accidental fires associated with consumer fireworks.

In order to prevent accidents and injuries while using legal fireworks at home, it is important to follow safety guidelines set by the City of Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, state, and national fire safety guidelines. These include never lighting fireworks indoors; always pointing them away from people, homes, and flammable materials; maintaining a clear area of at least 40 feet when lighting them; standing several feet away once lit; not approaching or attempting to relight a failed firework; keeping a bucket of water or hose nearby; supervising children closely at all times; seeking medical attention immediately if someone is injured by a firework; soaking spent fireworks overnight before disposal; never placing used fireworks in a plastic garbage can or near any structure; and being aware of dry conditions and avoiding using fireworks in or near dry vegetation.

Residents should also be aware of where fireworks are prohibited, such as designated public gathering areas, parade routes, and congested areas surrounding major public fireworks displays. This includes the Snake River Landing during the 4th of July Melaleuca Freedom Celebration Fireworks Display. Additionally, audible fireworks noise is prohibited under City Code, except for the hours between 8 p.m. to midnight on July 3 through July 5, as well as during approved permitted displays. Possessing or using fireworks on federal public lands is also prohibited year-round by the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service.
