Idaho Falls: Eastern Idaho First Responders Invited to Honor 9/11 Heroes at Annual Memorial Stair Climb

~ Eastern Idaho first responders are being invited to honor the heroes of 9/11 at the 4th Annual Memorial Stair Climb, hosted by the Idaho Falls Police Department in partnership with Anheuser-Busch. The event will take place at the Idaho Falls Malting Facility, giving first responders from across Eastern Idaho a chance to pay their respects to the brave police officers, firefighters, and other first responders who climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers on September 11, 2001.

The annual climb serves as a way for local first responders to remember and honor the strength, courage, and sacrifice displayed by those who responded to the attacks 25 years ago. It also pays tribute to all those who lost their lives when the towers fell.

The World Trade Center's Twin Towers were made up of 110 floors and 2,071 steps. To replicate this climb at the Idaho Falls Malting Facility, participants will need to climb the malt house stairs 7.6 times up and down.

Police officers, firefighters, and Anheuser-Busch employees have been participating in this climb every year to show their support and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The stairs will be open around-the-clock from midnight on September 1st until midnight on September 11th. First responders can participate at any time that is convenient for them and are welcome to climb multiple times. However, it should be noted that this event is not open to the general public.

Last year's participants included first responders from various departments such as Idaho Falls Fire, Bonneville County Sheriff's Office, Idaho State Police, Blackfoot Fire, as well as some out-of-state first responders who were visiting the area and looking for a local climb to participate in. Members of the Idaho Falls Police Department also took part in this meaningful event including members of their Honor Guard, Patrol shifts, Bomb Squad, Emergency Communications Officers, Detectives, SWAT, Command Staff, and professional staff. Many of them climbed in uniform or wearing specialty equipment such as Honor Guard uniforms or bomb squad protective gear. Some even returned to the stairs multiple times throughout the 11 days.

While the stair climb is limited to first responders, members of the public, businesses, and organizations can show their support by making a donation in honor of the climb. Five local charities have been identified as organizations that benefit first responders and support their missions in the community. These include Chaplains of Idaho, Greater Idaho Falls Police Foundation, Heroes Defense, Idaho Falls Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 6 - Officer Wellness Fund, and Tunnels to Towers.

Tunnels to Towers is a national organization that has a long-standing relationship with Anheuser-Busch and has also supported first responders in Eastern Idaho through their programs. Donations can be made directly to these organizations and will be logged as part of the effort on the 2026 Stair Climb Donation Log.

The Idaho Falls Police Department is encouraging all first responders throughout Eastern Idaho to participate in this memorial climb. They are also inviting the community to join in honoring those who gave their lives on September 11th by supporting these organizations that continue to support local first responders today. This can be done by attending events organized by Heroes Defense this weekend, visiting local 9/11 Memorials at Idaho Falls Fire Station 1 or Bonneville County Fire District 1, or finding other meaningful ways to pay tribute.
