HOUSTON, TX ~ Houston, TX - ExxonMobil and United Way of Greater Houston have joined forces to support the City of Houston's Power Protection Plan, which aims to strengthen the region's emergency infrastructure. The partnership was announced today, June 9, 2026, with a donation that will fund the purchase and installation of a generator at the Fonde Community Center in the Third Ward.

The Fonde Community Center has been a vital resource during natural disasters in recent years, providing a climate-controlled facility for residents in need. With the addition of a generator, the center will be able to continue serving the community even during power outages. This investment not only supports disaster preparedness but also contributes to the city's efforts to expand resources for those experiencing homelessness.

"We are committed to strengthening community resilience and ensuring that people have access to safe and reliable energy during challenging times," said Alvin Abraham, global manager of corporate giving at ExxonMobil. "We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of a solution that helps our neighbors better prepare for and recover from disasters."

The location of the generator was determined through an analysis conducted by United Way of Greater Houston. By combining data from 211 Texas/United Way HELPLINE calls with information from the United Way ALICE Report, they were able to identify areas with high levels of need. This analysis revealed that households already struggling before disasters were making the most calls for assistance.

Amanda McMillian, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Houston, emphasized the importance of having a safe and accessible place for community members during emergencies. "Disaster preparedness is not just about physical resources; it's also about providing support and encouragement when people need it most," she said. "We are grateful to ExxonMobil for their commitment to improving our city's resiliency and their ongoing support for disaster recovery efforts."

Thanks to ExxonMobil's generous donation and United Way's disaster resiliency efforts, the Fonde Community Center will now have a backup generator to keep its doors open during emergencies. This partnership aligns with the city's Power Protection Initiative, which aims to install generators in 100 critical facilities that were previously neglected.

Mayor John Whitmire expressed his appreciation for the partnership and highlighted the importance of having generators in critical city facilities. "When I became mayor, I was surprised to find that many of our essential facilities, including fire and police stations, did not have generators," he said. "This is exactly the kind of partnership Houston needs, and I am grateful to ExxonMobil and United Way for their support in strengthening our disaster preparedness. The Fonde Community Center has been a crucial resource during emergencies, and this investment will ensure it remains available to serve residents when they need it most."

The installation of the generator at Fonde Community Center is expected to be completed by May 2027. This partnership between ExxonMobil and United Way of Greater Houston serves as a testament to their commitment to supporting their community and improving disaster preparedness in the city of Houston.
