DENVER ~ Today, Governor Jared Polis of Colorado took a significant step towards supporting the state's first responders and charitable organizations by signing two bills into law. These new laws aim to expand eligibility for first responders seeking mortgages and protect legacy donors to charitable organizations.
The first bill, SB26-053 - Colorado Housing and Finance Authority Mortgage POST Officers First Responders, was sponsored by Senators Barbara Kirkmeyer and Kyle Mullica, as well as Representatives Chad Clifford and Ryan Gonzalez. This legislation will help to broaden financing and mortgage options for Colorado's first responders.
Governor Polis emphasized the importance of this bill in his statement, saying, "In Colorado, we are focused on helping every Coloradan achieve the dream of homeownership. Expanding mortgage and financing options for Colorado first responders is important to attract a strong first responder workforce to our state and take care of the Coloradans that dedicate their careers to protecting and serving our communities."

The second bill signed by Governor Polis was SB26-118 - Legacy Giving to Charitable Organizations. This legislation was sponsored by Senate President James Coleman, Senator Cleave Simpson, and Representative Chad Clifford. The new law aims to create safeguards for legacy donors who have passed away, ensuring that their charitable contributions continue to be honored and protected.
Governor Polis spoke about the significance of this bill as well, stating, "In Colorado we uplift and give back to our communities. Every Coloradan who chooses to give back and donate to a charitable organization should have their wishes protected. This new law helps break down barriers and limit delays so charitable organizations can quickly and efficiently uphold the donors' wishes to make a positive difference in our community."
These bills demonstrate Governor Polis' commitment to supporting both first responders and charitable organizations in Colorado. By expanding mortgage options for first responders and protecting legacy donors' contributions, these laws will help create a stronger workforce of first responders while also ensuring that charitable organizations can continue to make a positive impact in the community.
