~ Colorado Governor Jared Polis made a visit to southern Colorado today, stopping in both Colorado Springs and Pueblo. The purpose of his visit was to meet with students and staff at Jenkins Middle School, a recipient of the Purple Star Award for their dedication to supporting military-connected students. This award was established in 2024 when Governor Polis signed HB24-1076, also known as the Purple Star Program, into law. The program designates public schools that provide services and support to military-connected students and their families.
During his visit, Governor Polis emphasized the importance of supporting military families in order to ensure the success of all students. He stated, "No kids should be left behind because a family member is serving our nation." The governor expressed his pride in signing the Purple Star Award program into law and commended Jenkins Middle School for their commitment to supporting military families.
After visiting Jenkins Middle School, Governor Polis made a stop at PexPeppers Hot Sauce, a local small business in Pueblo. This business uses locally grown Pueblo chiles to create a variety of hot sauces that can be found in markets and grocery stores across the state. Governor Polis praised PexPeppers for being a "smoking hot" small business that contributes to the community and economy.

This district serves approximately 8,000 students, with 70% being military-connected.
Governor Polis spoke about the importance of providing high-quality education for all students, especially those from military families who make sacrifices every day for our safety and security. He praised the new building as a fresh, safe, and innovative environment that prioritizes the skills needed for success in the classroom and beyond.
