Governor Polis and the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing Open Applications for $160 Million to Reduce Healthcare Costs and Improve Access to Healthcare in Rural Colorado

DENVER ~ The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) has announced a new opportunity for eligible organizations to apply for $160 million in funding through the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP). This program aims to address significant health care needs and gaps in Colorado's rural and frontier counties.

Governor Jared Polis expressed his support for this initiative, stating that by reducing healthcare costs and supporting rural communities, access to necessary care can be increased for all Coloradans. The RHTP is focused on promoting sustainable, community-driven solutions that target the unique healthcare challenges faced by those living in rural areas.

The program is specifically designed to serve Colorado's 52 rural and frontier counties, as well as the two federally recognized tribes. These areas have been identified as having limited access to critical specialty care, high rates of chronic disease and preventable hospitalizations, and a need for improved resource sharing among providers. This includes critical access hospitals, rural providers affiliated with Native American and Alaskan Native tribes, behavioral health providers, opioid treatment programs, and emergency medical service providers.

Cristen Bates, Deputy Medicaid Director at HCPF, emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration within these communities. She stated that these public funds are meant to support changes that will ensure patients can receive care in their own communities for years to come.

Interested organizations are encouraged to review the RFA materials on the program website and begin planning their proposals early. The RFA is now available on the Rural Health Transformation Program website and applications will be accepted until August 3rd at 11:59 p.m.

The RHTP is a five-year federal initiative administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with a total budget of $50 billion nationwide from Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2026 through FFY 2030. Colorado has been awarded $200,105,604.17 for the first year of the program to support rural health transformation efforts across the state.

This funding will play a crucial role in addressing the healthcare needs of Colorado's rural and frontier communities. By investing in workforce development, innovative care models, technology-enabled services, and health system sustainability, the RHTP aims to improve access to care and overall health outcomes for these underserved areas. Interested applicants are encouraged to carefully review eligibility requirements, application instructions, and submission deadlines before submitting their proposals.
