~ In a ceremony held at the Texas State Cemetery, Governor Greg Abbott joined the Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution (TSSAR) to unveil a new monument honoring Texas revolutionary war patriots. The Governor was also inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution and received the Silver Good Citizenship Medal for his outstanding and patriotic achievements at the state and regional level.
During his speech, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of educating future generations about America's history and how it became the most powerful country in the world. He stated, "This monument here is an enduring testament to the heroes who fought for the freedom that is unique to America. Stories of these heroes must be told. Generations of Americans must be reminded of who they are and what they fought for."
The TSSAR President Mel Oller also spoke at the event, highlighting that this year marks the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution which not only gave freedom to British colonies but also inspired movements for freedom and liberty around the world. He stressed on recognizing Texans who played a role in this war and honoring their sacrifices for our freedom.

The newly unveiled monument honors 69 patriots of the American Revolutionary War who later settled in Texas, including native Tejanos who supported independence. Among those honored were José Santiago Seguín, grandfather of Texas Revolutionary hero Juan Seguín; Peter Sides, who fought in the Colonial Army and was later killed in battle fighting for Mexican independence; Antonio Gil Y'Barbo, founder of Nacogdoches; and William Sparks, a mounted rifleman in the American Revolution whose descendants also fought in the Texas Revolution.
Governor Abbott shared his strong American heritage dating back to 1755 and his ancestors' involvement in defending America's ideals against British rule. He proudly declared that he is a direct descendant from a patriot who supported American independence, leading to his induction into TSSAR.
The Governor was joined by TSSAR President Mel Oller and other Sons of the American Revolution at the ceremony. The event was also attended by members of the Texas America250 Commission, which aims to promote a deeper understanding of America's founding and the contributions of Texans towards a more perfect union for future generations.
As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this monument serves as a reminder of the brave individuals who fought for our freedom and inspired movements for liberty around the world. The Governor's induction into TSSAR and receiving the Silver Good Citizenship Medal further solidifies his commitment to preserving America's history and ideals.
