Governor Abbott Touts Texas Jobs Council During Gulf Coast Visit

~ Governor Greg Abbott of Texas visited the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Training Center today to promote the mission of the Texas Jobs Council. The council aims to strengthen the state's talent pipeline and address the growing workforce demands. During his visit, Governor Abbott emphasized the crucial role of career training in preparing Texans for high-demand, well-paying jobs.
The IUOE Training Center, located in Crosby, is known as the most comprehensive training facility for union Operating and Stationary Engineers in North America. Governor Abbott praised the center for its dedication to training skilled workers and contributing to Texas' economic growth.
In his speech, Governor Abbott highlighted the importance of aligning workforce training with the needs of Texas employers. He also noted that Texas leads the nation in workforce development and has been recognized as having the best business climate in the country.
Representative Briscoe Cain, Council Co-Chair Megan Mauro from the Texas Association of Business, IUOE Assistant Director Tom McNamara, and local 450 Business Manager Mark Maher Jr were among those who joined Governor Abbott during his visit.

Last year, Governor Abbott signed House Bill 20 and House Bill 120 into law to expand career and technical education opportunities for students across Texas. These bills aim to establish partnerships with higher education institutions and improve college and career advising.
The Governor also mentioned that over $7 billion has been invested in career training programs across Texas in the past two years. This investment reflects a commitment to equipping current workers with necessary skills and providing premier job training at high schools, colleges, and apprenticeship programs.
In addition to promoting workforce development initiatives, Governor Abbott launched the Texas Jobs Council last month. The council's inaugural meeting was held at the Governor's Mansion and focused on identifying executive actions that can be implemented immediately by state agencies to reduce regulatory burdens surrounding workforce development. The council will also present policy and legislative recommendations ahead of the 90th Legislative Session.
The council is expected to deliver a final report in November 2026, outlining recommended executive actions and legislative proposals to strengthen Texas' workforce development system.
