Governor Abbott Showcases Texas' Semiconductor Strength At Texas A&M Groundbreaking
Rezul News/10732168
~ Governor Greg Abbott, alongside other state officials and university leaders, participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Texas A&M (TAMU) Semiconductor Institute. The institute, located on the Texas A&M-RELLIS campus, aims to solidify Texas as the hub for innovation and semiconductor manufacturing in America.
During his speech at the ceremony, Governor Abbott stressed the importance of microchip independence for both Texas and the United States. He emphasized that Texas is already a leader in semiconductor manufacturing and design, with 15 consecutive years of ranking number one in semiconductor exports. By partnering with TAMU and other top research institutions, Governor Abbott believes that Texas can accelerate innovation and maintain its position as a global leader in future technologies.
The Governor also highlighted the urgency of developing, manufacturing, and exporting semiconductors to build a better future for the world. He noted that this groundbreaking ceremony is a significant step towards achieving that goal.

The TAMU Semiconductor Institute will play a crucial role in enhancing Texas' leadership in the semiconductor industry. It will drive economic growth through workforce development, disruptive research, and impactful collaborations focused on national security and the resurgence of semiconductors in America.
Governor Abbott's commitment to strengthening Texas' investments in the semiconductor industry was evident when he signed the Texas CHIPS Act into law in 2023. This act encourages semiconductor companies to expand their operations in Texas by leveraging the expertise and capacity of higher education institutions in the state. It also established two initiatives - the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Consortium - both administered by the newly created Texas CHIPS Office within the Office of Economic Development & Tourism under Governor Abbott's administration.
Representative Paul Dyson, The Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar, A&M System Regent Jay Graham, A&M System Vice Chancellor for Research Dr. Joe Elabd, and TAMU Semiconductor Institute Inaugural Director Dr. Steve E. Putna joined Governor Abbott at the groundbreaking ceremony.
The Governor's office has also promised to provide additional photos of the event on their website. With this groundbreaking ceremony, Texas takes another step towards cementing its position as the global leader in semiconductor manufacturing and innovation.
