Governor Abbott Announces More Than $22 Million In Grants For Electric Reliability In Northwest Texas
Rezul News/10738781
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that two grants from the Texas Energy Fund (TxEF) will be allocated to North Plains Electric Cooperative (NPEC) in the northeast Texas Panhandle region. The grants, totaling over $22 million, aim to enhance electric reliability for NPEC customers through various projects.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of reliable power in sustaining and developing strong communities in Texas. He stated, "These grants will update and reinforce energy infrastructure in Northwest Texas and ensure residents and local businesses have the dependable electricity they need to thrive."
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) Chairman Thomas Gleeson also highlighted the significance of grid modernization in meeting the increasing power demands across the state. He stated, "Reliability projects like these strengthen more than poles, wires, and substations - they strengthen Texans' confidence that the power they need will be there when they need it."

NPEC Executive VP and General Manager Mike Wolfe expressed gratitude towards TxEF and PUCT for their support towards rural electric systems like theirs. He stated, "This grant represents a major step forward for our cooperative and the communities we serve. By expanding our infrastructure and creating additional transmission connections, we are improving reliability and ensuring our members have access to dependable, affordable power for years to come."
The projects funded by these grants will benefit customers in NPEC's service territory, including parts of Hansford, Hutchinson, Lipscomb, Ochiltree, and Roberts Counties. The largest project includes upgrading 14 miles of transmission line segments along existing corridors to strengthen reliability and operational flexibility. It will also modernize aging equipment and infrastructure.
The second project aims to expand the Ochiltree Interchange by bringing a spare transformer into use. This will not only improve overall electric system operations but also support future system needs.
The PUCT oversees TxEF's Outside ERCOT Grant Program which provides funding for projects that enhance electric reliability and resiliency for Texans served by electric utilities outside the ERCOT region. More information on this and other TxEF programs can be found on the PUCT's website.
