Rezul News/10735571
ATLANTA ~ In response to the upcoming Memorial Day travel weekend, Governor Brian P. Kemp of Georgia has taken action to provide relief for hardworking Georgians at the gas pump. Today, he signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency and suspending the state's gas tax for two weeks.

The suspension will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. on May 20 and will run through June 3. This is separate from the current motor fuel tax suspension enabled by HB 1199, which is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. on May 19. The governor's executive order can be viewed here.

Governor Kemp stated, "As Georgia families prepare for the Memorial Day travel weekend, they should not feel blindsided by prices at the gas pump." He also emphasized that this action is a fulfillment of his promise, along with his partners in the legislature, to provide relief for hardworking Georgians whenever possible.

According to AAA, a record-breaking number of Americans – 39.1 million – are planning to travel by car this Memorial Day weekend. In Georgia, the average cost of a gallon of regular gas is currently $4.02 under the current gas tax suspension. This is significantly lower than the national average and makes Georgia one of only two states that have suspended their motor fuel tax.

Currently, Georgia's motor fuel excise tax is 33.3 cents per gallon for gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon for diesel. With this temporary suspension in place, Georgians can expect some relief at the pump during their holiday travels.
