Waters lives in South Georgia with his wife, Neda. He has practiced massage therapy since 2014 and owns Zen Den Massage Studio in Hinesville, Georgia. His writing includes essays, newsletters, interviews, and Behind Becoming stories about forgiveness, relationships, personal change, and living with unresolved endings.

"The adventures mattered, but they were never the point," Waters said. "The point was learning to meet my own life again."

The result is a memoir rather than a self-help manual. Waters does not offer a formula for repairing every relationship or turning pain into a tidy redemption story. He writes about continuing forward honestly, even when some questions remain unanswered and some relationships remain unresolved.

Adventure becomes part of the story as Waters begins reconnecting with life through travel, running a marathon, skydiving, paragliding, exploring unfamiliar places, and learning to ride a Onewheel. These experiences were never items on a timed checklist. They became ways of meeting fear, uncertainty, and possibility more directly.

"I did not write this book to show that I figured life out," Waters said. "I wrote it because I had to learn how to keep living when some things stayed unresolved."

The memoir reaches back into Waters's Gen X childhood and follows the relationships and patterns that shaped his adult life. It examines the pain of estrangement without assigning simple heroes or villains. It also explores forgiveness without promising reconciliation and acceptance without pretending that loss no longer hurts.

Despite its title, 50 Things at 50 is not a bucket list, a "50 before 50" challenge, or a collection of accomplishments. Waters is now 56, and the book reflects on experiences that began around age 50 as he confronted family estrangement, complicated relationships, grief, fear, forgiveness, acceptance, and the limits of control.
