~ On Thursday, December 4, 2025, Governor Ron DeSantis issued a statement to honor the late Suwannee County Commissioner Maurice Perkins. Perkins passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Perkins was a dedicated public servant who spent his career working towards improving the lives of those in his community. He was highly respected by many for his role as a pastor and licensed contractor in the area. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Perkins had also served as a County Commissioner for District Two since 2022.

In recognition of his service and dedication to the state of Florida, Governor DeSantis has directed that all flags at local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout Suwannee County be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, December 5, 2025. This gesture serves as a tribute to Commissioner Perkins' memory and his contributions to the community.

Brian Fienemann, Director of Real Estate Management and Development; Franklin White, Chair of County Commission; and Frank Davis, Mayor of Live Oak have all expressed their condolences for the loss of Commissioner Perkins. His passing is deeply felt by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed by the people of Suwannee County.
