Day of Caring Advances Neighborhood Revitalization in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. ~ On September 11, 2026, the City of Evansville and United Way of Southwestern Indiana came together for a special event in the Glenwood/Culver neighborhood. The event, called Block by Block, was held as part of United Way's Day of Caring and aimed to honor the National Day of Service and Remembrance through community service.

Volunteers and city crews joined forces to work on various activities such as minor street repairs, lawn maintenance, litter removal, tree care, and code enforcement follow-up. Together, they made a visible impact throughout the neighborhood. A total of 26 volunteers participated in the event.

Mayor Stephanie Terry expressed her gratitude for the volunteers' efforts and highlighted the importance of coming together for a shared commitment to their neighbors. She stated that this event was not just about cleaning up for one day but about building safe and welcoming neighborhoods where people can take pride in living, working, and raising their families.

The Block by Block initiative was launched in 2024 by the City of Evansville. Since then, it has collected over 180,000 pounds of trash, filled 326 potholes, cut more than 189 overgrown yards, and cleaned over 123 properties with trash and debris violations.

As part of the event's activities, Mayor Terry's Fight Blight initiative also reached a significant milestone by demolishing its 125th blighted residential structure at 316 Cass Avenue. This brings them closer to their goal of removing 150 blighted structures. The initiative has already made a positive impact on more than 15 neighborhoods across Evansville.

However, Mayor Terry emphasized that revitalization does not end with removing blight. It is equally important to invest in what comes next and continue investing in the entire block.

Apart from blight removal efforts, the City is also focused on creating new affordable housing units while preserving existing ones. To date, they have rehabilitated 456 housing units and have completed, under construction, or in the pipeline 1,663 new units.

One example of this is the recent full-home rehabilitation of 516 Madison Avenue by Community One. This project was part of their block investment strategy, which combines home rehabilitation with new infill housing to strengthen neighborhoods and provide more affordable housing options. The City's Affordable Housing Trust Fund provided $44,800 in funding for this project.

Jessica Welcher, Executive Director of Community One, highlighted the importance of partnerships in creating affordable housing. She stated that projects like 516 Madison Avenue not only transform one home but also have a positive impact on the entire block. She also expressed her gratitude for the support from volunteers, business partners, trade partners, and the City through the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

In her recent State of the City address, Mayor Terry reaffirmed neighborhood revitalization as a top priority for Evansville. The City's broader strategy includes removing blight, creating and preserving quality housing, investing in parks and public spaces, and actively caring for the neighborhoods where residents live, work, and play. With events like Block by Block and initiatives like Fight Blight and Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Evansville is making significant progress towards achieving these goals.
