HOUSTON - Rezul -- Creative Retail Packaging Releases 11 Holiday Packaging Predictions for 2026

New forecast helps brands sharpen design, sustainability, and sourcing decisions before the season's biggest production window closes.

Houston, TX | May 20, 2026

Creative Retail Packaging has published its annual forecast for the 2026 holiday season. The new report outlines 11 predictions that will shape design choices, sustainability strategy, and sourcing plans across the retail industry. Brand teams can use these insights to build stronger holiday programs well ahead of the Q4 rush.

Holiday spending across the United States topped $1 trillion last season. That figure marks a first for the National Retail Federation. A meaningful share of those purchases reached customers inside some form of holiday packaging, which makes 2026 program planning one of the highest-leverage projects retail teams will tackle this year.

"Holiday packaging carries more weight than many marketing and procurement leaders realize," said Michael Nass, Executive VP & Chief Sustainability Officer at Creative Retail Packaging. "Every bag, box, and mailer becomes part of the customer experience. Our 2026 predictions help brands turn that touchpoint into a real business advantage."

The full report groups its findings into three categories.

Design Predictions

Cloud Dancer, Pantone's 2026 Color of the Year, sets a calmer tone for premium holiday programs. Retro inspiration drawn from the 70s, 90s, and Y2K eras adds collectible value to limited-edition bags. Handmade marks, wax seals, and hand-drawn logos warm up printed surfaces. Quiet luxury replaces heavy ornamentation. A single foil accent now stands in for busy patterns of the past. One visual story should tie bags, boxes, ribbons, and mailers together across every customer touchpoint.

Sustainability Predictions

Seven U.S. states now enforce Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws. Several registration deadlines fall inside the 2026 holiday production window. Lightweight and recyclable Christmas bags carry lower EPR fees across active markets. Christmas paper bags and Eurototes remain the dominant choice as plastic bag bans expand. Right-sized e-commerce mailers cut dimensional weight charges, reduce filler waste, and lower carbon output during shipping season.

Sourcing Predictions

Brands locking in materials by June will see better pricing and longer creative runways. Nearshore suppliers offer faster sample turns and stronger protection against trade volatility. Consolidating with a single packaging partner removes the coordination burden that drives most holiday mistakes.
