Columbia: Warming centers, shelters available this winter

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - As the winter season approaches, the City of Columbia has announced its partnership with several emergency shelter providers in the community to offer a warm place for individuals to escape the cold. This initiative is part of the city's efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents during harsh weather conditions.

The Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services department is also coordinating a network of warming and cooling centers in the community. These centers will be available to the public as temperatures begin to drop, providing a safe haven for those in need.

The warming centers in Columbia include ARC (Activity and Recreation Center), City Hall, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services, Columbia Public Library, Salvation Army, and Salvation Army Harbor House. These locations will be open during their normal business hours and will provide access to public areas such as lobbies, restrooms, and drinking fountains.

In addition to warming centers, shelters are also available for those seeking overnight accommodations. These shelters may or may not include meals and their availability may vary. The city urges individuals with questions about shelters to contact the applicable provider for more information.

Columbia's shelters include Flourish (confidential address), Room at the Inn on Ashley St., The Salvation Army Harbor House on N. Ann St., True North (confidential address), and Welcome Home on Business Loop 70 E. Each shelter serves a specific demographic such as young adults aged 16-24, adults facing homelessness, families, individuals in domestic violence situations, and veterans.

For those who are unable or unwilling to access local emergency shelter services, Turning Point has been contracted by the city to provide temporary overnight warming center services at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church. This center will only open in the event of a National Weather Service forecast of temperatures 25 degrees Fahrenheit or below between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Turning Point staff will work closely with homeless service providers to ensure that individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness have access to overnight emergency shelters as the preferred option.
