Columbia: The 2026 Boone County Maternal Child Health Assessment is now available

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ The 2026 Boone County Maternal Child Health (MCH) Assessment has been released to the public, providing valuable insights into the health of nearly half of the county's population. Conducted by the Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS), this assessment is conducted every five years to determine the most pressing maternal and child health issues in the county.

According to the report, which includes data on children up to age 18 and women up to age 44, Boone County's priority maternal child health issue is "Strengths-based services & supports to promote healthy family relationships & functioning, enhance resilience, foster social connections and support children's social & emotional development." This determination was made after analyzing various indicators, survey responses from community members and stakeholders, and a Community Capacity Assessment.

Sarah Varvaro, Public Health Planning and Promotion Manager at PHHS, emphasized the importance of this assessment in identifying the needs of local maternal and child populations. She stated that it helps ensure that PHHS programming and services are directed towards making the biggest impacts for the community.

The findings of this assessment will be used to guide programming aimed at promoting the health of families and children in Boone County over the next five years. PHHS works closely with community members and partners to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses multiple levels such as individual, community, and policy changes. The goal is to prioritize preventing poor health outcomes before they occur.

Funding for this project comes from multiple sources including a contract with Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Maternal Child Health (MCH) Services Contract DH220051072 as well as support from Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) under grant B04MC52935. The total funding amount is $12,742,189 with no contributions from non-governmental sources.
