Columbia Police respond to early morning disturbance on Walnut Street

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ In the early hours of July 26, a large disturbance involving multiple individuals fighting broke out near Ninth and East Walnut streets in Columbia, Missouri. The Columbia Police Department (CPD) officers on patrol in the area were alerted to the situation at 1:24 a.m. and immediately called for backup.

As more officers arrived at the scene, seven people were arrested on various charges including peace disturbance by fighting, third-degree assault (felony) against a special victim (a police officer), resisting arrest, and an outstanding warrant. One officer was struck in the head during the altercation but did not require hospitalization after being evaluated by medical personnel. The individual responsible for assaulting the officer was arrested on a charge of felony assault against a special victim.

Another person attempted to flee from the scene but was quickly apprehended after a brief chase. Due to exposure to pepper spray during the incident, medical personnel assisted with decontamination for several of those arrested. However, all individuals declined further medical treatment.

According to CPD policy, every use of force by officers must be reviewed through the chain of command. As such, a thorough review has already begun in this case and will include reports, body-worn camera footage, and in-car camera footage. This review is ongoing and will follow state law and department policy.
