Columbia Police respond to climber on power plant tower

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia police and fire responded to a disturbance at the Municipal Power Plant on July 29th at approximately 6:25 a.m. Upon arrival, responders witnessed a man throwing items out of the tower window and waving his arms while leaning out. The man, later identified as Richard Dean Nichols, 33, of Columbia, was seen jumping the fence and climbing the South tower directly into the structure.

After two hours of attempting communication through a loudspeaker, officers were able to successfully negotiate with Nichols and he surrendered without incident. No critical infrastructure was damaged during the incident and there were no reported injuries. The Columbia Police Department worked closely with the Columbia Fire Department to resolve the situation.

Nichols was arrested and charged with burglary in the second-degree, property damage in the second-degree, and resisting arrest. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652 or CrimeStoppers at 573.875.8477.
