Columbia Fire Department responds to residential structure fire, April 3
Rezul News/10731742
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ On Friday evening, a residential structure fire broke out in the 200 block of West Old Plank Road in Columbia, Missouri. The Columbia Fire Department (CFD) received the call at 9:05 p.m. and immediately dispatched multiple companies to the scene.
Within four minutes, CFD arrived to find a single-story home engulfed in heavy flames. Despite the challenging conditions, firefighters wasted no time and entered the structure to search for any residents and begin attacking the fire. The garage was particularly difficult to navigate due to dense smoke and intense flames, which had also spread to the attic. To combat this, firefighters utilized a combination of tactics including vertical ventilation above the fire and placing personnel with hoselines below to stop its progression.

Thanks to their swift actions, the fire was safely under control within just 20 minutes of CFD's arrival. Fortunately, the sole occupant of the home had already evacuated before their arrival and did not sustain any injuries. In addition, four kittens were rescued by firefighters during their search in the basement and were happily reunited with their owner.
The dedicated crews remained on scene for approximately two hours to ensure that all hidden fires were extinguished and that the property was protected. A total of five fire companies, two battalion chiefs, and one safety captain with a team of 20 personnel responded to the emergency.
At this time, an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is being conducted by the Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion. The cause is currently unknown.
The CFD reminds all residents to have working smoke detectors in their homes as they can save lives in situations like this. They also commend their brave firefighters for their quick response and efficient handling of this intense blaze.
